03/18/2010 QMJHL: Kabanov vs Galiev

Canadian Junior Leagues -  On the QMJHL this week there was a battle of giants as Kirill Kabanov 's Moncton Wildcats faced Stanislav Galiev 's Saint John's Sea Dogs. The Wildcats won 5-2, but their coach barely played Kabanov. He was iced on the third line and played on only one powerplay and got no PK time, even when there was a 5 minute major penalty. On the other hand, Galiev was on the first line for his team and had good Powerplay time. RP.com staff followed the game and presents you an evaluation of both 2010 NHL Draft Eligibles. Scouting Evaluations:
QMJHL: Kabanov vs Galiev
Talent Analysis:
A quick winger with good size...very good passing game, can make effective outlet passes...very fast skater with good acceleration...good drive and will, if he gets hit he will try to play the puck even if down to the ice...excellent hand-eye coordination...very good puckhandling skills even at full speed...can deke around defensemen...has a strong slapshot, but has to gain more control over it...very good wrister with a quick release...a playmaking winger with first line potential...
Back In Russia:
Stanislav Galiev is a graduate of the Dynamo Moscow hockey school. He played there until the 2008/09 season, when he joined the Indiana Ice of the USHL. He had a strong season and he played very well even during the playoffs. He was then picked up first overall in the 2009 CHL Import Draft by the St. John's Sea Dogs, where he spent his first QMJHL season. During the 2010 draft Galiev was picked up by the Capitals, and was then sent back to the St. John's Sea Dogs for a second season in the Q.
NHL Outlook:
Stanislav Galiev is a player with big upside, and his presence on North American soil made him even more intriguing. He has all the tools to become an impact player in the NHL in three or four years.
RP.com draft projection: Late first round.
