Alexander Avtsin (Montreal Canadiens) on Ovechkin's track

2012 National Hockey League (NHL)

Considering the situation with the Russian Kontinental Hockey League, NHL teams lately took a more cautious approach towards drafting European players. But in the 4th round the Canadiens have been tempted by Alexander Avtsin (Montreal Canadiens).

A fairly sized 6-foot-2 player, Avtsin literally tored up the Russian junior league in the last season. Despite his young age he recorded excellent stats like 56 goals and 54 assists.

"He plays in a North American style" - explained Canadiens' scouting director Trevor Timmins - "He's always on the puck and isn't scared by the physical play. Avtsin has also a good passing game."

Because of that, some people compares him to Alexander Ovechkin (Washington Capitals). It was a good compliment for the youngster, who has the Washington superstar as a model.

When drafting Avtsin, Timmins declared that he has been ensured that he wants to play in the National Hockey League. And he didn't need an interpreter to clarify this point.

"To play in the NHL is my dream and I'm going to report."

Avtsin was also drafted by the Quebec Remparts. There are good chances that the Russian whiz kid will electrify the crowd of the Quebec Coliseum before the ones in the Bell Center.

Unfortunately, despite his will, you can't expect seeing Avtsin before the 2010-11 season. He has to fulfil his military obligations and thus will play a further year with Dynamo Moscow.

"He won't come to the Remparts this season" - admitted Timmins - "But we hope that he will play under Roy in one year.
