Sweden: Russia loses to America, grabs the third place

2009 U18 2009 Five Nations Tourn.



After the loss against Finland Team Russia didn't manage to switch the momentum ending up with a second defeat against America in the last match of the tournament. Thanks to this victory the USA resulted the competition's winner staying perfect with four victories in as many matches. Russia has thus conquered the third position, a result that can be considered encouraging in the perspective of the upcoming WJC Under 18. Vladimir Tarasenko and Kirill Kabanov have been the team's top players, but solid performances have been delivered by Maxim Kitsyn too. Igor Bobkov between the pipes haven't looked unconfortable, the same can be said for defenseman Dmitri Orlov.

The match against USA has been tough since the start as Plyuschev's guys has been outshot 17-8 in the first period. In the second one the Americans found the net after only twenty seconds with David Valek. And so in a ten minute span the USA scored three times: Valek opened the dancing just to be joined by Drew Shore at the twenty-eighth minute and by Kenny Ryan three minutes later. Russiansí reaction comes late after the three slaps from the opponents and only at the 39:29 Semen Valuisky cuts down the American lead after a feed by Sibirís Vladimir Tarasenko.

In the third period Russia attacks head down and finds the 2-3 goal with Kirill Kabanov assisted by Maxim Kitsyn. But Plyuschevís guys pressure is fought back nicely by the Americans, who ten minutes to the end found the fourth goal with Kyle Palmieri. Russians didnít give up though, and one minute and half later cut down again the opponentsí lead to one goal only thanks to a goal by Vladimir Tarasenko, with Sergei Chvanov and Kirill Kabanov as assistants. But the second goal of the game by David Valek definitely closed the game on the 5-3.
